GTA 6's online mode may be significantly delayed as GTA 5 Online still brings in a lot of money

A recent 26-minute gameplay demo of GTA 6 put to rest the community’s major concerns and brought unexpected news: the ambitious game’s single-player mode will not require any microtransactions.

However, against the backdrop of the base game’s triumph, the fate of multiplayer remains up in the air. Unlike when GTA 5 launched in 2013, just two weeks after the launch of the online mode, the developers remained completely silent on GTA Online’s successor.

This pause is due to several important factors. First of all, the studio devoted all its resources to the final polishing of the huge open world, striving to avoid technical problems when it is released on November 19, 2026.

Secondly, the original GTA Online still generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue every year, providing a stable cash flow. Management must figure out the best time to launch a new online ecosystem, lest they risk audiences leaving their still-profitable predecessors prematurely.
