As part of its legal response to a class-action lawsuit, Sony has officially said that buyers of PlayStation games cannot actually own a digital copy of the project due to the way the online store works.
The lawsuit involves allegations of violations of the California Digital Products Act of 2025 and a lack of user information. In official documents, the company’s lawyers emphasized that purchasing content from the PlayStation Store is only the purchase of a temporary license, not a complete property.
The defense argued that if digital games were truly redeemable for individual ownership like physical goods, multiple users would not be able to purchase the same version. The company uses games as an example Resident Evil Requiempurchased by each plaintiff in February 2026 for $69.99. This precedent once again reminds the gaming industry that publishers will completely abandon physical media by 2028.
