Developer Metro 2039 Confirming the return of one of the most unusual mechanics in the series – the hidden karma system. Meanwhile, in the new installment, 4A Games decided to rethink the usual approach to moral decision-making. According to the creators, they now want to make the moral component of the story clearer because the plot requires it.

Metro 2039 will be a direct sequel Metro: leaving And will tell a brand new story and a new protagonist-Outlander. After a long exile, he will have to return to the Moscow Metro, which is under the control of the new empire, a totalitarian regime led by Hunt. The new government controls the population through propaganda and repression, and outsiders themselves find themselves embroiled not only in the struggle against the regime, but also in confronting their own past.

Like previous games in the series, Metro 2039 will offer a combination of intense gunplay, stealth, limited resources, and a deep storyline with political and social themes. The game will also feature familiar enemies from the series, and weapons can be adjusted to suit your own play style.

However, now we know a more important feature. “Metro 2039” executive producer John Bloch said in an interview with GamesRadar+ that the developer will not abandon the Karma system. However, its implementation will differ from the previous sections.

in past games MRT Morality is often intentionally ambiguous. Players must evaluate their actions independently, and it’s not always clear which decision the system thinks is the right one. Furthermore, the role of karma is barely noticeable: in Metro Exodus, for example, receiving a positive moral outcome is indicated only by a brief flash of blue on the screen.

At the same time, players’ accumulated moral points may appear later – including affecting the story’s ending. It is this secrecy that has become one of the hallmarks of the series: the player may not even understand which specific actions ultimately led to one or another of his endings.

In Metro 2039, the developers intend to maintain the main principle that player actions have consequences, but the system itself will be more subordinate to the plot.

Bloch believes that the creator consciously abandoned previous moral “grey areas.” The new game will take a harsher stance against injustice and the consequences of war, while the new empire will appear as an overtly repressive and fascist regime. As a result, players will no longer always be faced with the classic dilemma between two equally controversial options.

This change can seriously affect the perception of karma. Previously players could accidentally do something the system deemed morally right or wrong, but now developers seem to want to tie consequences more closely to ongoing events and story themes.

However, it’s unclear exactly how the new version of Karma will work in practice. 4A games No specific examples of moral decisions were revealed, nor the way they could change Metro 2039’s passing. Therefore, the most significant consequences may become apparent again hours after certain actions are taken.

This is particularly interesting for the series, as Metro has traditionally not directly explained all the rules of its morality system to players. In previous games, you could play through the entire story, and after the final scenes you’d realize that some decisions had a lot more significance than they initially seemed. Metro 2039 should retain this element of surprise, but also provide a clearer contrast between the heroes and the forces they must contend with.

The game was released in April and is currently scheduled for release in early 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. An exact release date has not yet been announced, but it is expected that the project may appear in February next year.
