Even games that are no longer available digitally should benefit from Microsoft’s disc-to-digital program.
It’s no secret that Microsoft is preparing for a digital future that may not include optical disc drives. To this end, the “Disc to Digital” program was recently launched and is currently available for testing by Xbox Insiders. Using this feature, previous disc versions can be digitized so that they remain available in the future through backward compatibility even if the disc drive is no longer available.
During testing of this feature, insiders also discovered an astonishing fact: through disc-to-digitalization, even games that are no longer actually available for purchase digitally can be digitized. Games affected by such removals will still be supported, even if they are no longer available on the Xbox Store.
One thing is also clear in this regard: if you have purchased a disc of such a game in the past, you can continue to use it in digital form in the future by applying for a digital license. The basic requirement remains that the corresponding game generally supports the feature, as developers and publishers must agree to this as well.
It’s unclear when the disc-to-digital feature will be available for all Xbox users and exit the Insider program.
