Nintendo has unexpectedly delivered a comprehensive new update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Version 4.0.0 adds several new features to the long-running Switch favorite (now nearly a decade old), especially on the Nintendo Switch 2. In addition to improved graphics and faster loading times, a new local multiplayer mode for up to 8 people has been added. In addition, the game now supports CameraPlay and has received some minor gameplay adjustments.

8 players on Switch 2

Perhaps the most notable innovation is support for five to eight players in local multiplayer mode. For the first time, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can be played with up to 8 people simultaneously on a Nintendo Switch 2.

This can cause a lot of confusion, especially at parties and big game nights. Eight players share the same screen, which means individual image sections are correspondingly smaller. But technically, the feature only works on the Nintendo Switch 2.

The controller requirements are also interesting. Up to seven Nintendo Switch 1 controllers can be connected to the Switch 2, either Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. If you really want to play with eight people, you’ll need at least a Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller. As a result, Nintendo has ensured that the new eight-player mode will at least partially use next-generation hardware.

Clearer display on Switch 2 and HDTVs

This update also improves the display of “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” on Nintendo Switch 2. The game now explicitly supports new console monitors as well as high-definition TVs, so it should deliver sharper images.

“Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” was originally a very successful game on the first-generation Nintendo Switch. Through updates, the game is now being further adapted to the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware. Nintendo made it clear that the display was sharper, but offered no specific information on resolution or frame rate.

Additionally, load times have been reduced. Whether it’s before a match or a battle, players should now jump into the action faster. This improvement should be especially noticeable during longer multiplayer sessions or frequent route changes.

CameraPlay brings players’ faces into the game

Another new feature is CameraPlay support. The Switch 2’s separately available USB camera allows players to display their faces on screen during matches.

The camera feature is available for local multiplayer modes with two to four players, as well as for online play. However, if you want to use the camera online, you must be in a GameChat session at the same time. Nintendo emphasizes that camera recordings and microphone audio are only transmitted to members of the corresponding GameChat conversation.

Mario Kart just got faster

Version 4.0.0 also includes processing changes. Nintendo has increased player speed in matches. According to the patch notes, the speed increase is roughly equivalent to the benefit that the extra coins previously brought.

This basically makes all races a little faster. For long-time players, the change will certainly be noticeable. Time trial records and established driving techniques may receive renewed attention due to changes in base speeds.

Additionally, the item Boo (better known as Buu Huu in the country) has also been slightly improved. During the stealth phase, players will no longer lose speed if they enter terrain that deviates from their actual track. This makes the item more effective to use in certain situations, and is especially beneficial for shortcuts or dangerous maneuvers.

Booster Track Pass holders attend 96 consecutive races

Booster route pass owners can also benefit from the new option. You can now choose to set “96 games” in VS matches.

This feature is only available to players with the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Track Pass. Since the game now contains a total of 96 tracks plus all DLC tracks, every track can theoretically be completed in the massive racing series.

Such a marathon is unlikely to be practical for a normal race. However, the option opens up interesting possibilities for serious Mario Kart fans, tournaments, or special community events.

A surprisingly comprehensive update to an old favorite

Version 4.0.0 shows that Nintendo clearly hopes to continue supporting “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” on Switch 2. Technical improvements, faster load times, and especially a new eight-player mode make the game even more attractive to owners of new consoles.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is sticking to its previous strategy: updates are free. Anyone who already owns Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and has switched to the Nintendo Switch 2 will get the new features without any additional purchases.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – All 96 tracks in one video

After the final wave of DLC was completed, Nintendo once again showed off all 96 courses in “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” in a video.
