When the tablet market took off, many big companies came up with the idea of creating a foldable device that combined the features of a tablet and a laptop. Apple is one of them, and current CEO John Ternus made creating such a hybrid a priority (pictured below), but the company was still forced to abandon those plans.

At least that’s what he insisted. 9 to 5refer to research notes Omdia. For years, it was thought that a foldable iPhone with a flexible display would be just a “paper test” for Apple, to be followed by a larger device with a similar layout that combined iPad and MacBook qualities. This hybrid display is praised for its flexible display with a diagonal size of 18 to 20 inches. It was originally supposed to be released this year, but the deadline was pushed back to 2028.
Bloomberg’s ubiquitous Mark Gurman said earlier this year that such a device may never come to fruition. Sources involved in the development of such a product admit that it may remain experimental and never enter production. Omdia said this week that plans to release foldable MacBooks in 16.1-inch and 18-inch display sizes have been scrapped. Apple’s decision to make such a decision may upset the new CEO not because of the technical complexity of such devices, but simply because of the price positioning. With memory prices soaring, foldable tablets are too expensive to justify their existence.
