Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the gaming industry is facing its biggest crisis since the 1983 crash. This announcement is important to both developers and players because it shines a light on systemic issues in the market, including hardware shortages and astronomical budgets.
In the latest issue of Edge magazine, experts discuss the causes of a phenomenon called “Crash 2.0.” Sweeney noted that data centers are repurchasing components amid the AI boom, which is why memory and storage prices have quadrupled. He estimates that parts shortages will continue for another three years, until the new factory is built. Playable Worlds CEO Raf Koster added that spending on AAA games has increased tenfold over the decades and now stands at $400 million.
Former PlayStation CEO Sean Layden called on the studio to reduce its size and budget so that a small project with a profit of $50 million can succeed.
