Development studio Digital Extremes has taken a big step forward in the development of its free-to-play fantasy action RPG Soulframe. As announced by the creators behind Warframe, the next big update in the closed pre-alpha phase will be released in mid-September 2026. The update is called Preludes 16: “Of Hook & Hound” and introduces various mechanics first showcased at TennoCon 2026. In addition to the relaxing fishing mini-game and new equipment, the main focus of the free update is interactively raising your own wolf pups.
One of the core innovations of Preludes 16 involves interaction with the animal world of the game world Alca. After completing the “Fable of the Trapped She-Wolf” mission, players will have the opportunity to bond with the rescued wolf cub. You can raise the young animals by exploring together, petting them, getting sticks, or feeding them your own catch.
Behavior in daily life determines the companion’s development: depending on the direction, the growing wolf will then support you in gathering resources as a sniffer dog, track prey or actively intervene in battle as a powerful protector. Over time, the fully grown animal will eventually be able to be used as a mount.
Meanwhile, Digital Extremes expands the gameplay with a multi-layered fishing system. Using different baits and fishing rods, you can catch different types of fish and decide whether to release them or use them to craft resources and consumables.
The new dynamic weather system also ensures more atmosphere and interesting variety. Storms and thunderstorms not only change visibility conditions, but also actively affect the effect of elemental damage in combat and the availability of raw materials in the environment.
Weapon arsenals and adaptation systems are also under development. New equipment styles include two-handed clubs, mage staffs, rapiers, and witch cosmetic sets. The revamped temper system also gives you more freedom in crafting: weapons can now be disassembled to restore used tempers and specialize them into legendary weapons with craftsman Tuvarkan.
Preludes 16: The “Of Hook & Hound” update will be available to all participants in the free alpha test program on PC in mid-September.
