After days of criticism from the international developer community, Koelnmesse and the Games Industry Association have officially retracted their stance. In a comprehensive statement, Gamescom publicly apologized for its initial response to a series of blatant hardware thefts. Several independent studios, including developer Ryan Laley, iam8bit, and Tessera Studios, lost laptops, Steam platforms, and valuable development status during Cologne. After organizers initially dismissed the incident with a dispassionate, almost dismissive statement, those in charge now admit that the initial communication did not strike the right tone and lacked the necessary empathy. As well as a public apology, the show organization has now committed to a fundamental revision of safety standards in stand-alone areas.
The games industry was outraged after thieves were able to break into protected exhibition and B2B areas to steal equipment from small studios. For affected developers, this not only means the loss of expensive hardware, but in the worst-case scenario, months of work being destroyed and their shows ending prematurely.
However, the emotional and financial dimensions of the independent team were completely underrepresented in the initial reaction from the show organizers, which sparked a huge firestorm on social media.
A new statement now makes it clear that this theft was more than just material damage. An incident like this could ruin the entire Gamescom and ruin years of work. They understand the legitimate criticism and have been in direct dialogue with affected developers to deal with what has happened. At the same time, organizers emphasized that the strong willingness to provide help within the game industry – including through large studios such as CD Projekt Red – will in no way relieve the show organization’s own responsibilities.
In order to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, the organizers have announced specific measures. In addition to a targeted evaluation of the safety concepts of small exhibitors, roundtables with joint stand organizers will be held in the coming weeks to develop practical protective measures. Show management is also calling on all those affected to report the incident fully to Gamescom and the police to identify possible links.
Whether the belated apology and announced roundtable will continue to restore the damaged trust in the independent community will only be clear at the next edition of Cologne.
