The Bing Wallpaper app is popular among users for its beautiful images that can be set as desktop backgrounds. But this week the app made headlines for negative reasons. Many users have complained about wallpapers that are filled with ads, specifically full-screen ads for the Harry Potter movies and the blockbuster Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series.

Advertising content is not new to Bing Wall. The app often changes images related to popular movies or Xbox games. But this time, users were outraged by the 11-movie compilation wallpaper, which read “Now Available” in large letters in the lower right corner of the image.

Critics of Microsoft’s advertising policies argue that Bing wallpapers should be monetized but should not be overly saturated with such images and intrusive subtitles. In their view, it is normal to have the opportunity to know more about the images in the movie and to obtain information about the movie itself. But the same cannot be said for large advertising images with calls to purchase on your desktop.
It should be noted that Bing Wallpaper is an optional application, so Microsoft will not force the addition of additional ads through Windows 11 settings. But according to experts, Bing wallpapers are one of the few parts of the Bing brand that are popular among users, and mixing ads into them is simply short-sighted.
