CD Projekt RED has confirmed that development on the first Witcher remake has been paused. Most of the Fool’s Theory team is currently working on the Song of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3, with a smaller group helping to develop The Witcher IV.
CDPR explains that the remaster is technically related to the fourth installment in the series, as it will be based on it. The studio needs to prepare the resources, tools, and workflows for The Witcher IV before it can continue developing the remake more efficiently.
The Witcher Remastered was announced back in 2022, but it later became clear that the project needed to be more closely tied to the development of The Witcher IV. Apparently, Theory of Fools will return after Song of the Past is released and most of the work on the fourth game is completed.
“Song of the Past” is expected to be released in 2027, and “The Witcher IV” is expected to be released in 2028. The remake of the first “The Witcher” has yet to have a release date.
