The team behind popular emulator RPCS3 has announced a feature long-awaited by collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts – PlayStation 3 games can now be played directly from the original physical Blu-ray disc, without creating a dump first or requiring extra steps to take up storage space. Previously, basic support for disk reading was tested on Windows, but in the latest cross-platform update, developers digant73 and Megamouse fully extended the functionality on Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD.
It’s worth noting that this feature isn’t available on all drives. A disc drive (built-in or external USB) that can read the PS3 disk structure is required (on the project website Detailed list of verified models from ASUS, LG, Sony, Lite, etc. has been released). Checking compatibility is easy: the operating system must recognize the file when the disk is inserted.
