French studio Don’t Nod, mainly known for its original works life is strangeserious financial problems arose. The company announced its results for the first half of 2026 and also announced a large-scale restructuring that may result in the layoff of up to 90 people. The developer hopes to reduce costs this way and maintain the ability to continue developing new projects, but without additional funding, the studio’s future remains uncertain.

The situation has especially worsened against the backdrop of recently released games that haven’t been the most successful. past ten years Don’t nod Published many notable projects and built a reputation as a studio specializing in story-based games that place a strong emphasis on character and player choice. However, the commercial results of recent projects have been much more modest than expected.

2025 Company Release Lost Records: Bloom and Fury. The game received a generally positive response from critics and players, but in the fall, Don’t Nod admitted that sales were insufficient. The studio’s next project, aphelionreleased in 2026, faced bigger problems. Estimates vary, with Steam’s maximum number of concurrent users only being around 219, which is obviously not in line with the scale of the project and the expectations of the developers.

Against this backdrop, Don’t Nod’s financial performance deteriorated significantly. According to the published report, in the first six months of 2026, the company’s revenue was approximately 6.1 million euros, a decrease of approximately 56% compared to the same period last year. In U.S. dollars, that’s just under $7.1 million.

Studio management believes that the company’s continued existence under current circumstances requires significant cost cuts and changes to the production structure. The board has approved the plans and negotiations have begun, including with union-represented employees.

The main consequence of the restructuring is likely to be a reduction of approximately 90 employees. Don’t Nod intends to move to a more compact production model and centralize development around a single production line in France. Therefore, the company wants to abandon part of the previous structure and combine the experts needed to prepare new projects and complete games already in production.

As planned by management, the reduced team will allow for a more efficient allocation of available resources. The studio wants to reduce fixed costs while maintaining the core capabilities needed to develop new games. Going forward, Don’t Nod’s fate will largely depend on the commercial success of these projects.

But judging from the financial reports, restructuring alone may not be enough. The company pointed directly to the need to attract external financing. In addition, Don’t Nod warned that there is significant uncertainty about its ability to continue as a going concern after January 31, 2027 if it is unable to raise additional capital.

It’s a particularly troubling moment because the studio’s issues have been discussed for months. As early as June 2026, there were reports that Don’t Nod could face a complete loss of funding by November. Now developers are trying to prevent this from happening through new financial strategies and major changes to their business models.

Another blow is the decision of Don’t Nod’s major shareholder—— Tencent. The company has refused to provide additional financial support to the studio or increase its share, so the developer can no longer count on continuing its previous funding model.

However, the current situation does not mean the closure of Don’t Nod. The company is trying to buy time by cutting costs and focusing resources on the most promising areas. If the restructuring can stabilize the studio’s finances and future projects are commercially successful, the developer will have a chance to gradually regain its position.

However, the next few months will be extremely important for Don’t Nod. The studio must simultaneously complete current development, launch new projects and find external investors who can secure its further work. In the absence of funding, early 2027 could become a critical point.

For Life is Strange fans, this situation is particularly jarring. Don’t Nod stopped focusing on this series long ago, but it was the series that brought the studio global fame and established its reputation as a developer of story-driven adventures. Now the company must prove it can adapt to changing markets and maintain its production model after recent project failures.

It can’t be said yet that Don’t Nod is heading towards inevitable closure. On the contrary, management is clearly trying to prevent this from happening. But a combination of declining revenue, poor recent game performance, the need for layoffs and a lack of guaranteed outside funding has left the studio in a highly precarious position. The extent of the success of the new strategy will become clear in the coming months and may determine whether Don’t Nod will survive beyond January 2027.
