In an exclusive interview, gaming industry veteran and former Rockstar Games employee Joe Rubino takes a hard look at the current state of video game development. In his view, the massive traditional pipeline has exhausted its power, and the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 threatens to be the last blockbuster of this caliber created the old-fashioned way.
Rubino emphasized that modern game development is experiencing a systemic crisis due to the retention of outdated methods, and that the future remains generative artificial intelligence tools that will allow individuals and small teams to create AAA-level continents.
Furthermore, the former developer firmly believes that the main driver for the future development of large franchises will be support for user-generated content (UGC), allowing players to safely build and monetize their own stories in their favorite universes.
