Nintendo finally makes its official debut metroid greed – A new 2D game about Samus Aran. The project has been previously rumored and leaked, and was showcased during a Nintendo Direct presentation in September. Viewers can see fresh footage of gameplay in the familiar 2.5D format, and an exact release date has also been announced. Metroid: Greed will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
This news is particularly symbolic for the series, which celebrates its 40th anniversary on August 6, 2026. Since the release of Metroid Prime 4 last year Nintendo Revisit the classic 2D offshoot of the series. The last game of this type is metroid fearReleased in 2021, it received critical acclaim for its fast-paced gameplay and return to the series’ roots.
Judging from the trailer, “Greed” will be a continuation of the events of “Fear”. Samus finds herself on a mysterious planet where she must face an unknown enemy and find a way out of a dangerous situation. The basis of gameplay will once again be level exploration, platforming, shooting, and fighting against numerous enemies. The blocking system of “Fear” will also return, and a giant snake-like boss has appeared among the enemies.
Meanwhile, the new game seems to be actively developing Samus’ connection to Metroid. In the trailer, the heroine absorbs some enemies using abilities tied to her altered DNA. Additionally, Samus takes on an unusual form based on Metroid during the scene. It’s unclear how important this mechanic will be to gameplay, but it’s clearly going to be one of Ravenous’ notable innovations.

Nintendo has yet to reveal all the details about the developer, but previously released documents indicate involvement mercury steam – the studio that created Metroid Fear. If the news is confirmed, the team will continue working on a 2D offshoot of the series. Producer Yoshio Sakamoto, one of the series’ main writers, is also expected to return.
For MercurySteam, the new project may be especially important. Studio to release in 2025 Flame Blade It failed to attract the expected audience and weak sales subsequently led to layoffs and financial writedowns greater than initially expected.

Either way, Metroid fans won’t have long to wait. Metroid: Greed will be released on January 28, 2027, and will be one of the first major Nintendo Switch 2 games next year.
