After two years of tough negotiations and street demonstrations, unionized workers at Blizzard have reached a historic single contract covering nearly 2,000 employees working on major franchises such as World of Warcraft. special attackdevil и Hearthstone. The agreement was reached in large part due to the upcoming BlizzCon, which increased public pressure on the company’s management.
The new agreement establishes strong labor protections: employees receive better redundancy compensation (at least four weeks’ pay plus additional work weeks), a 14-month right to return to the state when vacancies arise in other departments, and limits on “just cause” layoffs. In addition, the document fixes protections for remote and hybrid forms of working, introduces a new minimum wage threshold (raised to 34% for some experts) and requires companies to coordinate with unions on the introduction of any artificial intelligence technology that affects working conditions.
Do you think this precedent will become a strong impetus for unionism and developer advocacy at other major game studios?
