Apple seems to have decided not to take any risks with the major components of its first foldable smartphone. The company is said to have signed an exclusive three-year agreement with Samsung to supply flexible OLED panels for the iPhone Duo.
According to insider Instant Digital, Apple will pay Samsung approximately $250 for each internal foldable display. By comparison, the external panel is said to cost another $80, and the A20 Pro processor costs about $280. At the same time, both panels of iPhone Duo will use the latest M16 OLED technology. It uses phosphorescent blue material instead of fluorescent ones, which should improve the screen’s energy efficiency.
The internal display will be significantly more complex than a traditional OLED panel. The screen itself will be placed between two layers of ultra-thin UTG glass, and a special viscoelastic bonding material will allow the layers to move slightly relative to each other. The design should work like the pages of a book when the smartphone is folded and unfolded. It looks like Samsung will make a lot of money from this contract.
