Valve has finally revealed the price and availability of its new VR headset, the Steam Frame. The device sells for $1,059 for the base version and $1,299 for the model with a 1 TB hard drive. Yes, for that much money, buyers not only get a headset for connecting to a PC, but also a full-fledged standalone VR device.
Steam Frame can launch regular games and VR projects on its own, as well as stream them from your computer. Valve has even ported Half-Life: Alyx to ARM64, so the famous VR hit can now run directly on the headset. A copy of the game will be included for free.
It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip inside and uses eye tracking to improve image quality – showing maximum detail where the player is looking, while the rest of the screen is simplified. However, the device is still aimed at enthusiasts – battery life is limited, and heavy gaming without streaming might be too much for it.
