A GeForce RTX 5090 owner managed to start a real fire in his computer by launching a game that was actually supposed to run on a toaster. We’re talking about Crypt of the NecroDancer, a decade-old indie project that’s unlikely to seriously load modern graphics cards.
One Reddit user said he set the game to maximum settings and played it on the RTX 5090 for nearly an hour. Then came the burning smell. After shutting down the computer and inspecting the graphics card, I discovered that the 16-pin 12V-2×6 power connector was severely melted, with the two adjacent pins actually turning into a large hole.
What’s particularly interesting is that the card apparently doesn’t even work under full load. Usually, such “incidents” are related to the power consumption of the RTX 5090 575-600 W class, but this time, it all happened when launching an extremely demanding game. The user pointed out that he had foolishly set the game settings to “Ultra” and that the project was clearly offended by the disrespectful behavior of the owner of such a humble piece of hardware.
