Twenty-six years after the console’s release, enthusiasts have successfully cracked and dumped the MechaCon chip in the PlayStation 2, which is responsible for drive control and anti-piracy protection. Developer DiscoStarslayer, together with modder Libby, has announced the successful completion of a multi-year process that included decapping, optical dumps and final software solutions.
The complete preservation of the chip’s contents will allow developers to delve deeper into the console’s hardware, improve emulation, and most importantly, create a full-fledged optical drive emulator (ODE) to replace worn out drives. This event opens a new chapter for the development of the self-made community and the preservation of the platform’s classic heritage.
