This year, Microsoft began testing an advertising layer for its Xbox cloud gaming service. To get 1 hour of gameplay, players must first watch an ad that lasts several minutes. Microsoft itself says it has laid out principles it plans to adhere to when using ads in games.
Current version obviously Attention has been drawn to a new Microsoft patent that states ads could be embedded directly into games. Application US 2026/0260258 A1 titled “Context-aware management of access to interactive software applications” was submitted on April 23, 2026, and registered on September 3.
According to the description, players can gain access to the item for a certain period of time without advertising. When finished, the system will launch a special window to display the advertising content. At the same time, it waits for signals from the game itself about the right time to display ads. Such moments could be the completion of a level or turn, a loading screen, the end of a story scene, or other natural transitions in the game. If the signal to show an ad comes too early, it will be ignored. When the appropriate moment coincides with the specified time window, access to the item is paused, the ad is launched, and the game is resumed.

A separate section of the patent is dedicated to the rewards system. After viewing the ad, the user receives a new visit cycle without ad insertion. The technology therefore links viewing of advertising content with the opportunity to continue playing the game.
The patent also describes how to use the game’s own signals, APIs, and other methods to determine the current status of the project. In particular, we’re talking about machine learning, which can be used to help systems understand when is the right time to display ads.
There’s no word yet on when this technology will begin being used in actual Xbox products.
