Development studio Digital Extremes is expanding its action role-playing game Soulframe with a closed alpha update for Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound. The free trial incorporates community-requested features such as a fishing system, interactive wolf cubs as future mounts, and a weather system that affects the game. Additionally, the crafting system has been revamped and new equipment options have been added.
The new companion mechanic allows players to select a wolf pup and take them on an adventure into the game world after completing specific introductory tasks. The bond between the character and the animal develops through interactions such as shared exploration, feeding, care, or mini-games. The system is intended to be gradually expanded in future beta updates, with adult wolves eventually becoming full-fledged mounts for players to move around large areas.
A newly implemented fishing system complements the gameplay slowdown. There are six different baits and a selection of exotic fish to choose from. Caught fish can be cleaned of corruptive effects and then used as food to raise companions or released into the world, which has different reward structures and resources.
The dynamic weather system is a major mechanical innovation that goes far beyond purely visual tweaks. Environmental conditions such as dense fog, rain showers, scenic sunsets or thunderstorms directly affect enemy behavior and the effectiveness of abilities. While dense fog reduces enemy detection range, thus encouraging sneak attacks, storm scenes significantly increase the damage of electrical attacks.
In terms of equipment, the developers have made fundamental changes to the temper system of the blacksmith Tuvarkan. Players can specifically dismantle old weapons, learn the included modifiers, and flexibly transform them into advanced equipment. New weapon types such as two-handed clubs, mage staffs, and foils, combined with new armor sets, provide additional options for personal builds.
The test model in the Preludes phase is Digital Extremes’ tool for testing and adjusting experimental design methods before large-scale official release. The continuous release of free content updates not only ensures the long-term commitment of the alpha community, but also establishes a transparent development environment for the final launch of the game.
