This is awesome: the famous action series has found a new home at Microsoft! Moving forward, experts at Activision, best known for Call of Duty, will be in charge of the fate of the former Xbox flagship series.
Coinciding with its latest restructuring measures, Microsoft also released some very important news about its flagship Xbox series, Halo. The action series will move to Activision in the future. Despite the massive layoffs at Halo Studios, the Halo brand will continue to operate there.
As a result, Activision will take over oversight of the series going forward and will develop the next Halo game. The effort will be “led by a new, dedicated team that will operate independently of the ongoing development and planning of Call of Duty. A small team at Halo Studios will continue to support the Halo community and previously released games.”
Going forward, Halo Studios will be largely relieved of responsibility and will continue to support released games, but the future itself will be shaped by Activision.
The series has been facing some difficulties since the release of its latest major installment, Halo Infinite. Multiple patches haven’t fixed every issue, and the game has struggled to keep its player base together. In October 2024, developer 343 Industries also changed its name to Halo Studios. What happens next remains to be seen.
Activision wants to give Halo a new look. Rob Kostic promised in a statement: “With Halo, our goal is clear: to create the greatest Halo game ever, a game that lives up to its universe and legacy while retaining everything that has excited players from the beginning. This is an ambitious undertaking that the series deserves. We have begun to build a team of professionals with outstanding skills and talents, and are excited to realize this new chapter together with the community.”
