Liu Zhimin, director of power batteries, admitted that Li Auto is actively working internally to lay the foundation for the production of solid-state batteries.

In fact, Li Auto has successfully tested their production technology on smart glasses and has been supplying them to Chinese customers since December 2025, but information about the type of batteries they use has never been publicly discussed. However, scaling the core technology to the level required for mass production in the automotive field will be quite difficult, and Li Auto believes this will only be achieved within five years. In other words, the brand’s vehicles will not be able to purchase solid-state power batteries in large quantities until after 2032.

Mass-produced solid-state electrolyte traction batteries must be durable, cost-effective and charge quickly. Although power battery market leaders such as CATL and BYD are also involved in the production of such cells, the company is developing them independently. The joint venture between Li Auto and Sunwanda has been operating in China since last fall, producing the current generation of power batteries and having the first of equal partners in charge of their design. They are already installed in the L6 and L8 hybrid cars as well as the i8 and i9 electric cars. Li Auto’s partner in this field is AVIC Lithium Battery. Li Auto has been developing its own batteries since 2020.

CATL will start small batch production of solid-state power batteries in 2027, and BYD is also preparing to follow suit. At the end of this year, Chery will begin installing hybrid versions of power batteries in its cars, combining multiple technologies used to produce solid-state batteries. Chery Automobile’s pure solid-state battery testing will begin in 2027. Geely and FAW won’t be far behind their rivals; the latter will even start selling production versions of electric cars equipped with such batteries starting next year. It is assumed that a car equipped with a solid-state power battery can travel 1,000 kilometers without charging. Recognizing consumer interest in the technology, Chinese regulators have banned automakers from calling solid-state transition batteries containing gel or partially liquid electrolytes.
