“Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition” received the main expansion pack “Viking Legend”. Players will discover three new civilizations, 15 single-player campaign scenarios, and get the chance to learn who had the right to sail to foreign shores with impunity in the Middle Ages.
The main new immigrants were the Danes, Saxons and Varangians. Each civilization has its own unique units and technology, but they all use a common architecture. The Danes relied on fast longships and sea raids, allowing them to turn foreign shores into a source of booty. Instead, the Saxons preferred to fortify their territories and unite England in the event of a Scandinavian invasion.
Varangians offer a more flexible play style. They moved freely along Europe’s waterways, used cavalry, and probably served wealthy nations as mercenaries. As a result, these three new civilizations offer vastly different ways of looking at a familiar era—from sea raids to fortress building and professional military service.
At the heart of Vikings is the story of Harald the Harsh. The campaign consists of three parts and includes 15 scenarios that will take players through different regions of medieval Europe. You’ll fight across the snowy plains of Scandinavia, serve as an elite Varangian in Constantinople, and then take part in a massive invasion of England. This add-on is available in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.
