Canonical has had to reorganize its workflow due to the impact of artificial intelligence technology – the company announced that it will transition Ubuntu’s unified patch packages to a new two-week release cycle as artificial intelligence continues to discover new vulnerabilities.

Recently, developers involved in this project have received a large number of vulnerability and threat (CVE) reports. Large language models and artificial intelligence agents have transformed bug hunting from a labor-intensive task into an automated process. Part of the Linux core developer community has developed a structure for assigning CVE numbers – they register thousands, because at the core level, almost any bug that can affect the operation of the system can be considered a vulnerability.
What’s happening is forcing distro developers to release fixes faster. Hit by the influx of CVEs, they abandoned their previous model of releasing regular updates every four weeks and separate security patches every two weeks. All fixes have now been merged and moved to a common two-week update cycle.
It’s not just the Ubuntu project that’s facing a new reality. The first sign that things are evolving into a new normal came with the release of the Linux 7.0 release candidate. Linus Torvalds noticed an increase in the number of bug reports, with each release candidate being larger than usual. The bugs discovered were not serious and there was no need to delay the release of version 7.0 – it was released on time. As we prepare to release Linux 7.1, we realize that what happened with the previous version was no accident. The error messages received either involve minor fixes or duplicate existing requests – the process can become unmanageable, but the community has found a way to work around it. Now Canonical is adapting to the new reality.
