iFixit experts took apart the Valve Steam Deck VR headset to assess the unit’s repairability. They inspected the internal layout of the component and praised Valve “Thoughtful design”which will simplify headset disassembly and repair.

The valve uses latches and screws in the housing design so the internal contents of the device can be easily accessed. However, the battery is glued inside the case, although developers can secure it in different ways to make it easier to remove the power source if necessary. There’s another significant drawback: the fan and radiator modules are not individually serviceable.
Other developer solutions also received positive reviews from iFixit. These include a magnetic lens mount and an easy-to-operate IPS panel. The rest of the headset is easily removable, save for a bit of clutter from the cooling module and the plethora of wires on top of the motherboard.
Despite these nuances, iFixit considers this design a success because in most cases the device does not require complete disassembly. In addition to this, iFixit has confirmed that it will sell replacement parts for the Steam Frame and publish a repair guide for the headset, similar to the Steam Deck and now Steam Machine.
iFixit has yet to release a teardown video of the Steam Frame controllers, but the company notes that they use magnetoresistive rods, which should be resistant to wear and tear. They also added that the TMR joystick itself is welded to the housing, making repairs more difficult.
