The developers of Crusaders talked about the equipment system in the new issue of Crusader Chronicles diary. There are no traditional classes in the game, so a Crusader’s combat capabilities are largely determined by weapons, armor, and shields.
The weapons here don’t just differ in damage numbers. Swords are more effective at health, axes deal critical hits more often, maces penetrate armor better, and polearms gain an attack speed bonus at the appropriate range. Bows have more impact on health but less on armor, while crossbows have higher base damage regardless of strength. Shields, among other things, allow you to block ranged attacks.
Equipment is divided into levels, which mainly increase basic characteristics, but there is also a second parameter – quality. It determines the number of random modifiers: from 1 negative value for “Flawed” to 3 positive values for “Exceptional”. They can change indicators such as damage, attack speed, critical hit rate, dodge, and block. You can find equipment from merchants or as loot, so items of the same type and level are likely to have completely different effects. Sometimes one winning trait is more useful than another quality level.
