The number quickly became a focus of discussion amid thousands of layoffs and a review of Xbox’s structure. However, available data shows that Microsoft has not allocated a similar budget to PHYSINT.

The story gained attention after reports about the cost of Hideo Kojima’s next fight. Earlier, The Game Business reporter Christopher Dring mentioned an amount of around $400 million, but later clarifications cast serious doubt on that figure. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier separately pointed out that several different amounts appeared on the project at the same time: with sonythe estimated cost during development, the possible cost of the project with certain Hollywood actors, the amount of the new deal with Xbox, and the final cost at launch – it’s not necessarily the same number.

According to sources familiar with the agreement between Xbox kojima production co., ltd.Microsoft signed a PHYSINT deal for far less than the $400 million mentioned. Other reports also indicate that Xbox is only providing a small portion of the funding for the project. However, the game’s exact budget has not yet been officially revealed, so any specific estimates are yet to be confirmed.

It’s also important from the perspective of the Xbox restructuring itself. appearance First The company’s plans coincide with massive changes within Microsoft’s gaming division, but there’s no reason to directly tie layoffs and closing certain areas to Kojima Games’ funding. The reorganization affects a wider range of projects and studios and is part of an overall strategy to cut costs and change the structure of Xbox.

Meanwhile, the deal with Kojima Productions truly becomes a noteworthy acquisition for Microsoft in its own right. PHYSINT was originally developed in partnership with PlayStation, but Sony stopped further funding of the project, and Xbox was later given the opportunity to continue production. In September, Microsoft officially announced the expansion of its partnership with Kojima Productions and confirmed that Xbox will publish PHYSINT.

The partnership is broader than a typical game publishing deal. Xbox and Kojima Productions have also agreed to collaborate on film and television. PHYSINT is therefore seen not only as a video game in its own right, but also as a potential basis for further development of related projects in other media.

Separately, Microsoft continues to collaborate with Hideo Kojima of – An atmospheric horror game, also in development for Xbox. According to insiders, the new agreement improves the terms of interaction around the project. Microsoft officially only confirmed the continuation of the OD partnership and expansion of cooperation in PHYSINT, and the contract details were not publicly disclosed.

“PHYSINT” itself is positioned as Kojima’s return to the espionage action genre. Well-known actors are already attached to the project: Bill Skarsgård will play the title role, with Charlie Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe also announced. Kojima was personally involved in the production and development of the project, and the initial material demonstrates his games’ traditional emphasis on cinematography.

However, the situation surrounding PHYSINT remains unusual. The game was conceived while Kojima Productions was working with Sony, but has now found a different publisher. In addition, some technical and platform aspects of the project remain uncertain. Hideo Kojima recently stated that PHYSINT’s engine has not yet been finalized and that issues with the game’s possible release on PlayStation have yet to be resolved.

In this context, it is particularly important not to confuse initial PHYSINT cost estimates with actual Xbox costs. While the initial project may indeed cost hundreds of millions of dollars, that doesn’t mean Microsoft agrees to fund it with an equal amount. There was reportedly much less agreement on the new deal.

The issue of AAA development costs remains one of the industry’s most pressing issues. Large projects are becoming increasingly expensive, and competition for talent, especially in U.S. technology centers, is driving up costs further. So Xbox is simultaneously looking for ways to reduce production costs, reallocating teams and considering working with outside developers.

In the case of PHYSINT, Microsoft seems to be trying to combine a partnership with one of the industry’s most famous creators with a more cautious approach to spending. Another source of potential returns could come from film and TV projects, the rights to which are included in the expanded deal between Xbox and Kojima Productions.

So the story of Xbox allegedly spending $400 million on PHYSINT during a period of massive layoffs doesn’t look as clear-cut as it initially seemed. The project itself does remain a big bet for Microsoft’s partnership with Kojima, but the information currently available suggests that funding from Xbox will be much smaller. The final cost will only become clear as development progresses, but at this time PHYSINT’s exact budget remains unknown.
