The chief executives of OpenAI and Anthropic have been summoned to a hearing as part of an Australian Senate inquiry into how OpenAI’s artificial intelligence agents hacked into the country’s healthcare system database. A hacker attack on Australia’s health insurance plan, which Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned at the United Nations Security Council, is one of the most high-profile incidents of unauthorized access by artificial intelligence to external systems outside the United States.
A spokesman for Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who is leading the inquiry, told the agency the inquiry would hold a public hearing in Canberra on Thursday.
“Sam Altman must answer serious questions about the OpenAI hack of an Australian government website.”Hansen-Young said. She added that Altman and Dario Amodai should be present to answer the Senate’s questions and have an honest discussion about what effective, long-term regulation of the industry should look like.
Albanese called the hack of the Medicare portal unacceptable and said he expressed his extreme concerns to Altman. He was particularly angry that the company only reported the hack on September 10, after the incident occurred in June. OpenAI, in turn, claims they were not aware of this until August. The company emphasized that the incident was not intentional and did not affect any confidential information.
