Hackers have discovered a new way to jailbreak Sony PlayStation 5. Various exploits that allow you to gain control of your console have been circulating for quite some time, but with the new Relapse, things get even more serious – and it works on all firmware versions except 14.00, which was released less than two weeks ago.

Broad support for Relapse would mean serious problems for manufacturers and could lead to a wave of piracy on the platform. The importance of this event is due to two factors. First, the vulnerability can be exploited even by people who have recently purchased a PlayStation 5 but have not updated their system to the latest firmware. In other words, any PS5 retail version (including PS5 Pro) sold for more than two weeks is prone to relapse.
The second reason creates a more serious problem for Sony. To run modern games, you usually need the latest firmware version. That said, to update a pirated game to improve gameplay or get DLC, you usually have to install the latest firmware. The Relapse vulnerability applies to PS5 systems with software version v7.00-13.60 starting from the end of July, which means that pirates can crack any game released before the update 14.00.00 on September 16, 2026. For example, Marvel’s Wolverine was released on September 15th. To make matters worse, Relapse takes less than a minute to deploy.
Finally, Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t the only game affected by this issue. The updated version of “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered” launched the day before also launched “Relapse” in some way. It’s likely that a firmware update will be released in the near future to fix the vulnerability, but it’s unclear how Sony will put the genie back into the bottle with all released PS5 games and updates.
