Paradox Interactive has released By God Alone, a major add-on for Crusader Kings 3 strategy, along with the free Crozier update (Patch 1.20), which fundamentally redesigns the game’s religion mechanics.
Paid add-ons let you play as a theocratic ruler for the first time, including the chance to lead the Pope, adding a College of Cardinals, a majestic cathedral with three floors and a massive “Great Schism” situation to the starting scenario in 867.
In turn, the free Crozier update introduced rituals to the game, heresy mechanics for low religiosity, a redesigned excommunication system, personal metrics for character “spiritual satisfaction,” and the separation of priesthoods into monastic and military orders.
In addition, players can now establish up to nine holy sites (instead of three) and appoint “anti-popes” to compete for influence in Christendom.
Players have left 70% positive feedback on the add-on.
