Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have revealed important information about plans to adapt the hit action series Hellraiser into a film in an official press release. American actor Alan Ritchson has been hired to star in the sci-fi project, the studio has confirmed. However, the casting was accompanied by a calendar adjustment: the action film’s global theatrical release was postponed from the original scheduled November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028. By moving it into the summer blockbusters, Sony is positioning the brand as one of its central theater projects in 2028. Renowned action film expert Justin Lin will continue to direct
With Alan Ritchson’s involvement, the film established itself in the action genre. The actor gained global fame primarily through his starring role in the action series “Rachel” and in blockbusters such as “Fast and Furious 10”. His physical presence and experience in physically demanding roles fit perfectly with the tone of the original, which was known for its satirical exaggeration of military pathos, scenes of collaboration and uncompromising fight against alien threats.
Executives have tentative control over which specific character Ritchson will play in the film’s universe, as details about specific scripts and plots are closely guarded.
The delay to June 2028 gave director Justin Lin’s production team more time to transfer the visually complex battles against swarms of insects and robots to the screen with the required quality. Justin Lin, best known for directing the “Fast and Furious” series as well as “Star Wars: Beyond the Stars,” is considered an expert in large-scale action choreography and rhythm. The decision to release the film in early summer also underscores Sony management’s growing confidence in the commercial potential of video game adaptations.
The project is in line with Sony’s comprehensive strategy to gradually open up the successful PlayStation brand to film and television. Following the commercial success of the film and series projects Uncharted, The Last of Us and Twisted Metal, Helldivers is the next cornerstone in the cross-platform direction.
Upon launch, the base game Hellraiser 2 became one of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s most popular services, which is why the film adaptation aims to benefit from the series’ widespread popularity. Further casting decisions and insights into the production are expected to be announced in the coming months.
