Cars with gasoline engines are constantly being replaced by cars with other power plants. First, the diesel boom started in Europe, then electric vehicles took off at a rapid pace, and now a global crisis in oil and petroleum product logistics has further dented sales of gasoline vehicles.
Based on statistics used by this publication Nikkei IndexIn the first half of this year, global sales of gasoline engine vehicles were 20.25 million units. This is certainly a huge number in absolute terms, but once we start considering the share of total sales, everything is far from rosy. As a result, the share of gasoline vehicles in total sales fell to 49% during this period.

Moreover, the trend is not favorable for gasoline: in the first half of 2025, for example, the sales share of gasoline-engine cars was 59%. In 2021, this proportion will reach 73%.
As we pointed out above, there are many reasons for this, key among them being the growing demand for hybrid and electric vehicles. In the first six months of this year, global electric vehicle sales totaled 6.9 million units, accounting for 12% of total personal car sales. Still, it should be understood that the statistics do not include the past few months, when oil logistics problems became particularly acute.
