Rust has released its October livestock update, adding cows and sheep to the game. Animals can be captured, raised, and sold, and their products open up new resources, recipes, and ways for you to build your own farm.
Cows now provide milk and manure, and sheep now provide wool and manure. Both species can be killed for meat, bones, and skin, but breeding is more fun. Animals, like plants, now have needs and genetics, so players can breed individuals with desired traits. Mature cattle can also be brought to pastures and sold to NPCs, receiving random offers based on genetic quality.

Milk opens up an independent production chain. You can drink it immediately or leave it in the refrigerator for four hours and drink it with skim milk and cream. The latter is a more effective product and is used together with milk in recipes. Wool can be given to merchants, and the reward depends on the amount of material – a maximum of 400 units can be accepted at a time.
Fences and gates have been added to contain animals, and biogenerators can now be used to produce low-grade fuel from raw or spoiled meat. Meanwhile, the island is home to frogs, rabbits, squirrels, turtles, crabs and jellyfish. The developers have made optimizations individually so that the increase in the number of creatures will not directly reduce server performance.
