After 11 years, Halo 5 is finally coming to PC

Nearly 11 years since its release Halo 5: Guardians PC users can finally play the full version of one of Bungie and 343 Industries’ latest massive shooters on the platform. Admittedly, we haven’t talked about the official version from Microsoft yet: enthusiasts have already started developing a large fan project, Halo 5 Reforged, whose goal is to transfer the entire game to Windows – from the story campaign to the multiplayer mode and Warzone.

Halo 5 remains the only major installment in the modern series that has yet to receive a full PC release. At the same time, the situation always seems a bit strange in a political context. Microsoft in recent years. Xbox is aggressively launching its biggest PC project, and Halo itself is shaping up to be a nearly full-fledged multi-platform PC franchise in the Microsoft ecosystem.

Moreover, the technical foundation for porting Halo 5 to Windows has been around for a decade. In 2016, 343 Industries released the free Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition for Windows 10. The PC version lets you use Forge to build maps, test them with other players, and then publish the created content for use on Xbox One. In other words, most of Halo 5’s technology already runs on computers, but Forge has never launched a full-fledged campaign and standard online mode.

Now fans themselves are working to rectify the situation. Halo 5 Remastered is an independent non-profit project whose goal is to create a complete PC version of Halo 5 based on the existing Forge computer foundation. The author plans to port the campaign, regular multiplayer, large-scale theater battles, and Spartan customization systems. In the future, the team also hopes to add support for local networks and modifications.

However, the project is still in a fairly early stage. The developers explicitly warn that work is ongoing, so none of the announced features are considered fully finished. Halo 5: Remastered does not have a release date, and there is currently no public version available. So it’s too early to talk about a full-fledged “release of Halo 5 on PC”: we’re talking about a promising fan project that’s on the verge of achieving that goal.

What’s particularly interesting is how Reforged plans to technically achieve this goal. The author used Forge as the basis for the project and used files from the original version of Halo 5, which users must provide themselves. The team does not distribute Microsoft-owned game data with its project, but instead uses its own tools and code required to run a compatible PC environment.

Halo 5 is almost 11 years old this year. The game was released on October 27, 2015, becoming the first large-scale project 343 industries It follows Halo 4, but its legacy is decidedly more controversial than that of the series’ classics. One of the main complaints was the plot, especially in the context of the marketing campaign, which set up certain expectations among viewers for a confrontation between Nathan Phillip and the Master Chief. But many players rate the online portion of Halo 5 much more highly: the developers reworked the fundamentals of action, shooting, and multiplayer combat, and Warzone offers a particularly large-scale match format.

That’s why a potential Halo 5 PC port is still interesting even after all these years. For some viewers, this is not only a chance to fill a long-standing gap in the Halo library, but a chance to finally play through the entire campaign and experience multiplayer without buying an Xbox. At the same time, Microsoft itself has not shown any intention to release an official port for a long time: as early as 2016, the company directly stated that it had no plans to port “Halo 5: Guardians” to PC.

The return of Halo 5 comes at a very unusual time for the series itself. In September 2026, Microsoft announced a major revamp of the Xbox, with Activision tasked with developing the next mainline Halo game. To this end, we are creating a new dedicated team separate from the Call of Duty department. A small part of Halo Studios will continue to support existing games and communities.

As a result, the official future of the series is now changing at the level of the publisher itself, while fans are simultaneously working to close gaps that have long existed in the past. Should Halo 5 Remastered be fully released, it would mark the unofficial end of the Halo PC series – nearly a decade after Forge proved Halo 5 could run on PC.
