Donald Trump recently spoke at a meeting with industry representatives about the need for a government agency to oversee artificial intelligence safety issues. Now he has appointed a key official to oversee the development of artificial intelligence in the United States: Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton.

In addition to risks, the agency will assess opportunities for the United States based on the development of advanced artificial intelligence models. Clayton himself says the risk of losing leadership in the field is quite high. The agency he leads will propose measures that impact the field of artificial intelligence for existing federal authorities in the United States.
The structure’s governing body will include Emile Michael (Deputy Secretary of Defense), Scott Kupol (Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management), and FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson as Vice Chairman (Clayton). Rank-and-file members of the committee will include Vice President Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegers, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant and White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles. Former AI czar David Sachs and former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have been brought in as outside advisers.
