The developers of the ambitious space simulator Star Citizen from the Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) studio shared plans for further development of the game and even started talking about the release of version 1.0.
According to CIG head Chris Roberts, Star Citizen will reach alpha 4.0 in 2024, and developers will be able to bring features from Squadron 42 (story mode) into the game's “living universe” at an “accelerated pace.”
Roberts assures that all this leads to the launch of Star Citizen version 1.0. By this, CIG understands a set of functions and content that represents a “commercial release” – not “alpha” or early access.
“(Achieving 1.0) means the game welcomes new people, is stable and polished, and has enough gameplay content to keep users consistently engaged,” Roberts explained.
There is no release date or even release date for Star Citizen version 1.0 yet, but CIG promises to share the game's development plan by the end of 2024. For now, as Roberts puts it, “Star Citizen 1.0 is glimmering on the horizon.”
Roberts acknowledged that the development of Star Citizen has been delayed: “The journey has been longer and more difficult than I expected 11 and a half years ago, but the destination has become more exciting and rewarding.”
Fundraising for the development of Star Citizen started back in 2012 and 12 years later reached $669 million. The project is considered one of the most expensive and controversial in the history of the industry – even CIG was accused of fraud.
