His name and popularity are not as high as many other Japanese developers. But on the other hand, their consistent work has succeeded in building a niche community that can always anticipate a certain quality from every product they prepare and are satisfied with. That's right, we are of course talking about Vanillaware which has now entered so many types and settings of RPG games. Their latest fantastic product is 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, a visual novel game with extra strategy gameplay which ends up presenting such a fantastic sci-fi story after years of development. Now, still standing under the Atlus and SEGA banners, Vanillaware is testing their luck again with a new game – Unicorn Overlord. Coming with a beautiful teaser, Unicorn Overlord's identity as a game created by Vanillaware really flows from every point of view. One of the most obvious is of course the visual approach which remains anime style, but is so unique with the hand drawings that you can differentiate it from similar products made by developers that are not Vanillaware. A strategy game concept that is not widely explored and a fantasy story setting that is the foundation, Unicorn Overlord sounds like a product that has been long awaited. Especially for a strategy game, it is also ready to offer quite unique mechanics and systems. So, what does Unicorn Overlord actually offer? Why do we call it a game that focuses on horses, thrones and women? This review will discuss it in more depth for you.
Plot
Unicorn Overlord is set on a continent called Fevrith which is divided into several kingdoms. You will play as an exiled prince named Alain, who, as can be predicted, is trying to reclaim the throne that is his. The right to the throne was indeed something he deserved considering that Alian's departure from the Kingdom of Cornia, which he should have controlled, occurred after the coup process that occurred. A great general named Valmore succeeded in overthrowing Alain's mother Ilenia from power, making Cornia no longer safe. Alain, who was still small at that time, was entrusted to another trusted soldier – Josef, who would be protected and cared for until he grew up. Before she died, Ilenia also entrusted her with an important artifact from the Kingdom of Cornia – the Ring of the Unicorn which would play a big role in the future. The ring with the shape and symbol of a unicorn will be the key to defeating Valmore.
So as Alain grew up in exile, Fervith had to meet and deal with the cruel power of Valmore who was not only cruel, but also ambitious. Valmore, who is now marrying Galerius and rebuilding the old kingdom – Zenoiria, has succeeded in causing a commotion in the kingdoms surrounding Cornia – Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias and Albion. In the midst of this situation, faced with a conflict with one of his mother's loyal former soldiers, Alain understands that they did not commit this betrayal voluntarily. Influenced by a mysterious magical force controlling their minds, Alain also discovers that the Ring of the Unicorn is the key to clearing this magic and returning the characters to normal minds again. Alain could no longer remain silent. So, can Alain regain his throne as king in Cornia? What kind of war with Galerius would happen? Who are the companions that Alain meets during his journey? You will of course have to play Unicorn Overlord to get the answers to these questions.
