The Government of the Russian Federation, on behalf of the President, organizes the production of domestic stationary and portable game consoles, as well as the development of related services. Creating a system on the level of Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox from scratch will take up to 10 years and cost 10 billion rubles, according to experts interviewed by Kommersant. VK can be entrusted with project coordination, and GS Group can resolve production issues.
In January, the president held a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Kaliningrad region and instructed the government to consider organizing the production of stationary and portable game consoles by June 15, as well as study the creation of “an operating system and a cloud system for delivering games and programs to users.” The Fplus and GS Group holdings have the competence to produce such devices, according to the publication’s interlocutor from among electronics manufacturers, and the management of the project could be entrusted to a major participant in the gaming industry, for example, VK.
But Fplus says that in Russia there are no companies capable of setting up the production of PlayStation and Xbox-level consoles from scratch – the development of a platform, OS and games will be required. Such devices operate on advanced hardware components, but are sold either at cost or lower, because the manufacturer receives the main profit from the sale of content. Creating such a system from scratch will take about 10 years and require a budget of 5–10 billion rubles, but by that time the finished product will be 10–15 years behind advanced solutions.
With portable consoles in the Valve Steam Deck format, everything is simpler: their production can be entrusted to contract suppliers or you can set up your own production using existing Chinese projects – this will take one or two years and cost 500 million rubles. Any firmware based on the Android Open Source Project code base is suitable as a software platform. But there are other, more secure options, for example, Linux or Aurora.
