OpenAI has lost several top executives in a matter of months, adding to the turmoil at the company’s management as the largest developer of artificial intelligence tries to justify its $852 billion valuation and prepare to go public.

Last week, OpenAI chief operating officer Brad Lightcap announced that he was leaving the company to found his own startup. His responsibilities were transferred to Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, but she announced her resignation two days later. Lightcap has been working at OpenAI for eight years, and Dresser joined the company in December from Slack. The exodus of talented and influential employees has put CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman in an awkward position: Employees demand stability while investors worry about competition from Anthropic and Google, a rapidly advancing open-weight model in China and volatility in the stock price of SpaceX, which recently went public.

Brockman said there was no reason to worry. According to him, Dresser was responsible for overseeing revenue “Business Formation Period”and replaced by Dali Rajik “We will translate the experience we gain into repeatable solutions as we build a complete system that makes artificial intelligence more useful to people and businesses.”. However, OpenAI lost more than just Dresser and Lightcap. In April, marketing chief Kate Rouch left the company for health reasons; in July, Fidji Simo was forced to leave for the same reason; and in April, the company lost three more executives, including VP of Science Kevin Weil.

Prior to joining OpenAI, Denise Dresser spent more than a decade in senior management positions at Salesforce, where she was responsible for developing OpenAI’s high-margin enterprise division, which competes directly with Anthropic. Greg Brockman said that at the end of July, the company’s revenue increased by 20% quarterly, and the enterprise sector grew by 32%. “We are now at an inflection point: a new generation of models that will not only change work processes, but also the very basis on which companies are organized and managed”he agreed.

The latest personnel changes come after OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar held a meeting with investors the previous day. She said the company’s enterprise revenue has surpassed consumer revenue, thanked Dresser for her contribution and dismissed concerns about the open China model. Dresser’s contribution proved to be significant indeed – the business grew to 2 million customers, double the number a year earlier.

Reports say not all investors are embarrassed by the sudden change CNBC – A company’s chaos is seen as a reflection of its culture. Two current employees who spoke on the condition of anonymity admitted that this is indeed the company’s normal mode of operation – they hire new people quickly and fire them just as quickly. No one is immune to this chaos: In 2023, even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired for a few days and then reinstated. The company discussed the incident at length when it sued Elon Musk — he lost the case but promised to appeal the decision.
