ASUS has released the latest update to its proprietary GPU Tweak III utility, numbered 2.1.8.0, which adds useful security features for owners of high-end graphics cards. Now, the app can not only warn of problems, but also automatically shut down the computer when severe overcurrent is detected in the 16-pin 12V-2×6 (or 12VHPWR) power connector.

This innovation extends the capabilities of the built-in Power Detector+ tool, which monitors load distribution at each of the cable’s six power contacts. Previously, if there was a danger of uneven contact, one of the lines breaking (0 A), or the current jumping above 9.2 A, the program only displayed a pop-up warning asking the owner to manually de-energize the system. Now, when the allowed current value is exceeded for an extended period of time, the software can react independently to prevent the connector from overheating and melting. This feature works with ROG Astral and ROG Matrix line cards equipped with popin sensors, but users must manually enable auto-shutdown in settings.
