Gaming’s two biggest first-person shooter franchises are once again in direct competition for players’ attention. As announced by developers Battlefield Studios and EA, the free beta phase of Battlefield 6 will run from now until August 25, 2026. The chosen time is anything but random: Activision will begin the first testing phase of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 next weekend. By synchronizing free offers, EA is trying to capture the attention of multiplayer fans and bring new player numbers to its shooter brand.
The deliberate interaction between the two publishers has now become a tradition for major releases. In the past, EA and Activision have often used free weekends or open beta events to take the wind out of their competitors’ sails during important release windows.
For those interested, the two campaigns overlap in time, but that also leaves plenty of leeway: With the Battlefield beta phase starting this week, players have plenty of time to try out Season 4’s new features before the Modern Warfare 4 beta begins on Friday.
In terms of content, the beta version of “Battlefield 6” is still very rich. In addition to getting two new maps for the season, the focus is on the long-awaited Top Gun collaboration. Trial users can take to the skies in Carrier Strike mode and try out the rest of the campaign. Since the related melee mode Fighter Sweep is part of the free fork Battlefield REDSEC, players will actually have access to the entire cross-pack during the beta.
On the other hand, Activision is going all out to launch the beta version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. In addition to a variety of classic multiplayer maps and modes, the beta weekend also features an absolute innovation: for the first time in the history of the series, the entire mission of the single-player campaign will be playable as part of the beta. Feedback from the community will show which of these two shooting giants comes out ahead by the end of the weekend.
