The shortage of electronic components has given the graphics card market a strange vehicle for growth. Old powerful models are no longer being retired – Chinese craftsmen are increasing their storage capacity and putting them up for sale again. According to reports, a large number of modified Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards with 20 GB of memory have appeared on the Chinese secondary market, priced around 3,000 yuan ($445) video card.

The GeForce RTX 3080 has been modified almost as long as the graphics card itself. Previously, they were used on crypto farms, where powerful GPUs with large amounts of memory were needed. They then refocused on artificial intelligence tasks; now gamers have the opportunity to use them for their intended purposes. In the gaming world, it’s an affordable alternative to the significantly more expensive Blackwell series models.
The revised Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 offers 8,704 CUDA cores and a 320-bit memory interface, but its original 10GB capacity has been doubled to 20GB. Therefore, as per 2026 standards, this graphics card does not have one of the most annoying limitations of the original model. It also has obvious shortcomings, including 320 W power consumption, lack of official warranty, and lack of support for DLSS frame generation and multi-frame generation technology.
Ampere is an old microarchitecture, but Nvidia continues to support it. GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards are receiving driver updates and some new DLSS features. All GeForce RTX models support DLSS 4.5 super-resolution technology with next-generation Transformer models; at the same time, GeForce RTX 20 and RTX 30 can be used with newer versions.
The current situation with Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 graphics cards is sad. The median price of the GeForce RTX 5070 in the United States reaches $899.99, which is approximately 64% higher than the MSRP of $549. The new Blackwell is increasingly at odds with official prices, and a $445 20GB GeForce RTX 3080 is looking less and less like an odd compromise compared to them. It’s not a replacement for a new model, but the six-year-old Ampere suddenly has a second chance.
