The successful live-action God of War series planned for Amazon Prime Video has found a new male lead. According to industry magazine Variety, former WWE pro and actor Dave Bautista is now officially playing the iconic role of Kratos. A change at the top of the cast became necessary after originally hired actor Ryan Hurst had to leave the project due to injury. Hearst, known for Sons of Anarchy and the original voice actor for Thor in the new game, strained his bicep while filming a stunt. With his recovery and subsequent recovery taking months, executives at Amazon-MGM Pictures and Sony Pictures decided to recast the film to meet production schedules.
The change in lead roles occurred during filming of the first season in Vancouver. Since the first episode scenes featuring Ryan Hurst in Kratos costume have already been filmed, they will now have to be reshot with Dave Bautista in the fall of 2026.
Bautista brings a wealth of experience to the role of the elderly Spartan warrior from Norse mythology: In addition to his well-known role as Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the 57-year-old actor has also shined in roles in films such as Dune, Blade Runner 2049 and Knock on the Cabin. He also possesses the necessary physical attributes without the need for months of intensive advanced training preparation.
The casting change doesn’t change the rest of the cast of the ambitious series adaptation. Young actor Callum Vinson remains as Kratos’ son Atreus. The top cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Alastair Duncan as Miair, who lends himself to the game as the wise voice leader. Ronald D. Moore (“Outlander,” “Battlestar Galactica”) serves as showrunner and chief writer.
Amazon has high hopes for the project and has already ordered two seasons in advance, which will be produced one after another. The series is adapted from the Norse-era plot of the 2018 hit game and follows Kratos and Atreus on their perilous journey to reach the highest peak. Thanks to Dave Bautista’s timely commitment, filming should continue without multi-year delays. However, a specific launch date for Prime Video has not yet been confirmed.
