Google has launched a new tool that will let you mark your favorite sites as preferred sources and will help online publications make up for a drop in traffic caused by the spread of artificial intelligence responses in search results.

The dedicated button, called “Preferred Sources,” follows the launch of similar functionality for Google’s AI models, including AI Overview, in May. Online publishers can now place this button directly on their website, inviting readers to mark it as a preferred source. Materials from the selected resources will then appear more frequently to users across the company’s services, including Google News and Discover feeds.

You can also select a source through the Google settings page to find the publication you want by name or website address. As of launch in May, users had selected more than 345,000 preferred sources this way, according to the company. Google expects this innovation to help publishers increase and compensate for some of the traffic lost by distributing AI-generated answers directly in search engines.
At the same time, Google will continue to expand the personalization capabilities of its news services. In the near future, users will be able to explain in simple phrases which topics in the Discover feed interest them more and which topics interest them less. The corresponding settings will appear in the publication menu, and suggestions will be adjusted on the fly. It is also reported that Android users will be able to customize daily news summaries in the Google News app.
