Chinese auto giant Geely Holding Group established subsidiary Jiyu Space in 2018 to create a constellation of orbiting communications satellites to enable low-cost data transmission. This month, Geespace received permission from Chinese regulators to test satellite communications systems for two years.

Other Chinese telecom players are likely to follow Geespace’s example, as IoT infrastructure should connect billions of devices and there will be enough room in the market for everyone. Between 2022 and 2025, Geespace completed the first phase of constellation deployment by placing 64 satellites into orbit through six launches. Eventually, the number of communications satellites should exceed 5,600. Cooperate with telecom operators in more than 20 countries in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
According to ABI Research, at least 13.6 million devices used satellite communications for the Internet of Things last year, an increase of 20.7% over the previous year. By 2030, this number will more than double to 28.6 million units, with related revenue reaching $3.1 billion.
