In an interview with IGN at gamescom 2026, Big Fire Game Director James Bae talked about the development status of the MMO shooting game Cinder City, the results of the recent preliminary alpha test, and plans for the next phase of testing.
Let’s highlight the key statements:
- At present, the main systems and overall structure of the game, including the combat system, have basically taken shape. Now the team is mainly working on expanding the scope of content.
- A three-day pre-test was recently conducted with approximately 7,000 US players participating. Participants are asked to complete an introductory single-player mission, after which they can enter the open world. The test is primarily designed for experienced players, so some users found the recommended difficulty level to be too high.
- Overall, Big Fire Game is pleased with the test results. The developers paid special attention to client stability, optimization and download speed, and the graphics and narrative also received positive reviews. At the same time, participants noted the need to improve combat balance and difficulty, and also complained about a lack of ammunition. Another important note is the need to make the mechanics of identifying and attacking vulnerable enemy units clearer.
- Cinder City’s next alpha test will likely take place in about three months. Players not only from the United States, but also from Europe and some Asian countries will be able to participate.
- After completing the prologue, users can freely explore the 10×10 square kilometer open map of Seoul.
- In a world, there are hundreds to thousands of players at the same time.
- Co-op play will feature a squad system, allowing you to explore the city not just on foot – four-seater cars, motorcycles and other vehicles will also be in the game. Players can also travel to underground locations.
- At launch, Cinder City will offer five character archetypes with different play styles. These will include damage-focused warriors, defense-focused tank characters, and support classes that can heal allies.
- Cinder City is scheduled to be released on PC and consoles in the first quarter of 2027. On PC, the game should be available on Steam and PURPLE, and will also be available through GeForce NOW.
- The possibility of cross-platform play is being considered, but a final decision has not yet been made. The developer noted that shooters have traditionally been easier to play with a mouse and keyboard, so studios will have to evaluate this aspect when implementing cross-platform play.
