At Gamescom 2026, Microsoft and Playground Games conducted a large-scale demonstration fablewhich gives us our first detailed look at the gameplay of the long-awaited reboot of the series. This eighteen-minute clip is dedicated to one of the story missions and showcases not only the picturesque world of Albion, but also the fundamentals of the combat system.
The centerpiece of the demo, shown only to reporters, was the mission “Mud and Death.” The protagonist and Humphrey, the leader of the Heroes Guild, come to an abandoned mine, which was once flooded and has now become a refuge for ghosts and skeletons. This is where the developers decided to show how flexible combat can be in the new Fable.
General spectators have the opportunity to appreciate Ballston, one of the main cities of the game. The streets are packed with residents, surrounded by countless buildings and interiors, and the visual composition relies on bright colors, rich lights and a wonderful atmosphere. As a result, Albion looks more vivid and detailed than previous shows.

The developers have retained the division of hero development into three directions that fans are familiar with, namely Power, Skill, and Will, but have significantly expanded the possibilities for combining them. In combat, you can switch between melee and ranged weapons and magical abilities almost instantly. The equipment you choose directly affects your play style.
In the demo, the hero used a two-handed Bow Hammer. This slow but extremely powerful weapon is capable of destroying weaker opponents in one hit and is effective against armored foes. Wide swings allow you to attack multiple opponents at once, while powerful attacks turn the hero into a deadly wheel that delivers a series of blows. You can also dodge, parry, and special finishing moves.
The magic system looks equally interesting. Spells shown include Fireball, Lightning, Ghost Blade, Lift, Dash, and Thrust. Not only do they allow you to deal damage, but they also allow you to build full-fledged combos: for example, lift a group of enemies into the air, hit them with lightning, or teleport behind them. Of particular note is the traditional Fable spell “Befowl,” which turns enemies into harmless chickens. Moreover, even the undead that have been transformed in this way have become a kind of “immortal chicken”.
Long-range combat also has its own characteristics. The demonstration showcased a highly accurate, slow-draw dark wood bow and a fast-firing repeating crossbow. Shooting is particularly effective against an enemy’s weak points – for example, you can knock an enemy off balance by hitting their legs or attacking a boss’s weak point.
There are different types of enemies in the game. Hollow folk skeletons can be equipped with ranged weapons, engage in hand-to-hand combat, or wear armor to protect them from certain attacks. Wraiths are fast and can create new enemies in battle. Finally, the Lantern Keeper acts as a mini-boss: he can fly, use fire attacks, shoot explosive projectiles, and summon ghosts.
At the same time, the system is constructed in such a way that different capabilities naturally complement each other. Using magic, you can immobilize a group of enemies, then attack stronger enemies with your bow and end the fight with a powerful strike from your weapon. In this case, the player does not have to constantly enter the menu – the main ability can be used directly during combat.
Fable is coming soon February 23, 2027 On Xbox Series X|S and PC, as well as Xbox Cloud Services. On launch day, the game will be available on Game Pass and will support Xbox Play Anywhere. Premium owners will have access to the game five days early, on February 18th.
The new demo may be the most detailed look at Fable gameplay yet. After years of anticipation, Playground Games’ project is finally starting to showcase not only its impressive graphics, but also what it’s like to be back in Albion.
