RPG MAKER U2U developers at Gotcha Gotcha Games have published a letter in which they talk about changes to the editor’s development plans based on user feedback. In particular, the program will be distributed as a standalone application steamthere is no need to separately install Unity, Unity Hub, or create a Unity ID account.
Project producer Ichinose said the team didn’t fully explain the U2U device initially because the editor was built on Unity. Now the developers have clarified that users do not need to interact with the engine directly. RPG MAKER U2U can be installed from the Steam library and launched as a regular application.
The interface and workflow will also be familiar to owners of previous editors in the series. U2U’s event system, database, battle settings and other elements are largely based on RPG MAKER MV and MZ. The author wishes to maintain the usual game creation method and add the functionality of the new P2D map system.
One of the notable changes is character movement. Unlike the previous MAKER RPG’s standard four directions, U2U supports movement in eight directions simultaneously. There is no need to create a separate graphics resource for diagonal orientation: the editor can dynamically adjust existing images for diagonal movement.
P2D systems are also designed to handle height and depth. When building a map, you can use stairs, ramps, ascents, descents, transitions above and below other parts of the level. Therefore, maps can be constructed not only on the usual flat surfaces, but also take into account vertical space.
The developer promises to introduce you to more features of U2U in the next letter from the producer.
